India's CPI celebrates 100th anniversary, remains influential in Kerala and Tamil Nadu despite national decline.
The Communist Party of India (CPI) marked its 100th anniversary on December 26, 2025, commemorating its 1925 founding in Kanpur.
The party, which led the world’s first democratically elected communist government in Kerala in 1957, has seen its national influence decline since the 1964 split that created the CPI(M).
Today, it remains a key player in Kerala’s Left Democratic Front, holding four cabinet positions and the Deputy Speaker’s role, and is part of the DMK-led alliance in Tamil Nadu.
Nationally, it has two MPs, around 20 MLAs across three states, and recognition only in Kerala, Tamil Nadu, and Manipur.
