The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) has been expanded to 2,053 sq km, becoming India’s largest municipal body after merging 27 urban local bodies, increasing its population to over 1.34 crore.
The reorganisation, effective under Government Order No.
292, created 12 zones and 60 circles, with 300 election wards to improve service delivery and governance.
New zones include Malkajgiri, Uppal, and Shamshabad.
The move, part of a broader restructuring, aims to enhance administrative efficiency ahead of the 2026–27 census, with ward boundaries based on natural features and contiguity.
A special chief secretary post was created to oversee the expanded area.
