A Hindu man was killed in Bangladesh amid claims of extortion, sparking concern over rising minority violence.

Amrit Mondal, a 29-year-old Hindu man known as Samrat, was beaten to death by a mob in Rajbari’s Pangsha area on December 24, 2025, after allegedly attempting extortion. Police said he was involved in criminal activities, including murder, and had been in hiding in India before returning. His associate, Mohammad Selim, was arrested with two firearms. The interim government condemned the violence, denying it was communal and attributing it to a clash over extortion. Three cases have been filed, and authorities are investigating, while also rejecting attempts to frame the incident as religiously motivated. The killing follows the recent lynching of another Hindu man, Dipu Chandra Das, sparking national and international concern over rising violence against minorities in Bangladesh.
