CIA tried to overthrow Chile’s Allende from 1963–1973, sparking reforms for oversight.
A newly declassified report reveals the CIA conducted a decade-long campaign from 1963 to 1973 to undermine Chile’s democratically elected president, Salvador Allende, including efforts to block his election and weaken his government through covert funding and political sabotage.
The findings, based on classified documents and part of a 50th-anniversary review of the Church Committee’s 1975 investigation, show resistance from the Ford administration, including attempts by Henry Kissinger and the White House to withhold key records, such as Nixon’s directive to “bring Allende down.” Despite obstruction, the committee’s work led to lasting reforms, including permanent congressional oversight of intelligence activities, reinforcing democratic accountability and transparency in U.S. foreign interventions.
