Afghan man charged in 2025 White House ambush that killed guard; faces possible death penalty.
Rahmanullah Lakanwal, a 29-year-old Afghan national who entered the U.S. in 2021 via Operation Allies Welcome, faces federal charges including transporting a firearm and a stolen firearm across state lines with intent to commit a felony, opening the possibility of the death penalty.
The charges stem from a November 26, 2025, ambush near the White House that killed 20-year-old West Virginia National Guard member Sarah Beckstrom and seriously injured her colleague Andrew Wolfe.
Lakanwal, who reportedly worked with U.S. agencies including the CIA in Afghanistan, was shot during the attack and has pleaded not guilty to related D.C. charges.
The case has been transferred to federal court, where capital punishment is an option, and he remains in custody.
