Travel author Rick Steves saved Washington's Lynnwood Hygiene Center from closure by buying its property for $2.25 million.
The Lynnwood Hygiene Center in Washington, serving about 700 unsheltered people, was saved from closure in December 2025 after travel author Rick Steves purchased its property for $2.25 million.
The center, which provided showers, meals, and shelter since 2020, faced shutdown when its landowner sold the site.
Steves, who had no prior connection to the facility, bought the property to ensure its continued operation and future expansion.
His investment will fund repairs, new showers, laundry machines, extended hours, and a bike repair station.
Center director Sandra Mears said the news brought hope to residents long accustomed to uncertainty.
Steves emphasized the need for public investment in social services, calling the purchase a way to "love my neighbor" and address systemic homelessness.
The center remains open, offering vital support to those in need.
