Syrian forces, backed by U.S. coalition, arrested top ISIS commander Abu Omar Tabiya in Damascus suburb, seizing weapons and detaining associates.
Syrian forces, with support from the U.S.-led coalition, arrested Taha al-Zoubi, a senior Islamic State commander known as Abu Omar Tabiya, in al-Moadamiya near Damascus.
The operation, based on intelligence, yielded a suicide bomb belt and military weapons.
Officials said al-Zoubi had led IS in the capital region and that the arrest dealt a major blow to the group’s networks.
Several associates were also detained.
On the same day, Syrian forces killed three members of an armed group in Latakia.
The crackdown follows a recent surge in attacks on security personnel and civilians.
