Quebec to appeal to Supreme Court over law blocking electoral map changes deemed unconstitutional.
The Quebec government plans to appeal to the Supreme Court of Canada after the Quebec Court of Appeal ruled its 2024 law blocking electoral map changes unconstitutional.
The law aimed to preserve two ridings in eastern Quebec but was deemed to violate the Charter of Rights and Freedoms by disproportionately benefiting about 65,000 voters while diluting the votes of nearly half a million others.
The court emphasized that electoral boundaries must be updated every two general elections to maintain equal voter representation across 125 ridings, and that the law improperly interfered with the independent boundary commission process.
The Supreme Court’s decision will determine whether provinces can restrict map changes to protect regional representation.
