A key migrant smuggler, Kidane Zekarias Habtemariam, was extradited from the UAE to the Netherlands to face life imprisonment for leading a violent network trafficking Eritreans through Libya.
Kidane Zekarias Habtemariam, 41, a key suspect in a major people-smuggling network, was extradited from the UAE to the Netherlands on Wednesday.
He had fled Ethiopia in 2021 while on trial for smuggling, was convicted in absentia and sentenced to life in prison.
Dutch authorities allege he led a criminal group involved in smuggling migrants—especially Eritreans—through Libya, committing violence, extortion, and sexual abuse.
His case is linked to another Eritrean man, Tewelde Goitom, currently on trial in the Netherlands, where prosecutors seek a 20-year sentence.
Habtemariam, arrested in Sudan in 2023, was flown to Amsterdam by Dutch military police and is set for his first court appearance Saturday.
The case is one of the largest human smuggling prosecutions in Dutch history.
