On November 27, an Iowa State Patrol officer stopped a driver traveling at 164 mph, one of several extreme speeding incidents recorded on Iowa highways, where speeds over 100 mph are increasingly common.
The driver, traveling during a holiday travel period, claimed to be low on gas.
Last year, troopers issued over 1,000 tickets for speeds exceeding 100 mph, with 10,000 to 11,000 citations expected this year for speeds at least 20 mph over the limit.
A bill to increase fines for excessive speeding has been introduced in the Iowa House by Representative Joshua Meggers, a state trooper who previously stopped a driver at 103 mph.
The patrol continues urging safe driving, especially during busy holiday travel times.
