India's high court ordered winter gear for 2,575 border road workers facing -40°C temperatures.
The Himachal Pradesh High Court has ordered the Border Roads Organisation to provide essential winter gear, including jackets, boots, gloves, and kerosene, to 2,575 casual labourers working on India-China border roads under Project Deepak.
The court emphasized that these supplies are critical for worker safety in extreme conditions, with temperatures dropping to -40°C at elevations up to 15,000 feet.
The directive follows a petition by the Deepak Project Workers Union, part of INTUC, highlighting life-threatening working conditions in Kinnaur and Lahaul-Spiti.
While 2,292 workers have received winter jackets and some gear, the court mandated full distribution before winter ends.
A follow-up hearing is set for January 7, 2026, to assess compliance.
Union leaders called the order a historic step in protecting workers' health and dignity.
