India’s 2027 Census, the first fully digital census in the country’s history, will begin with the Houselisting and Housing Census phase in April 2026, running through September, followed by Population Enumeration in February 2027 for remote areas.
The Union Cabinet approved the ₹11,718.24 crore project, which includes caste enumeration, and will deploy around 30 lakh field workers, generating 1.02 crore man-days of employment.
Data will be collected via mobile apps with strong security measures, under the Census Act, 1948, and Census Rules, 1990, providing detailed information on demographics, housing, education, migration, and economic activity.
