Hanwha’s Philly shipyard says it can build U.S. nuclear subs, after a $100M purchase and $5B expansion plan.
Hanwha’s Philadelphia shipyard says it has the capability to build nuclear-powered submarines for the U.S. Navy, according to Hanwha Group’s global chief strategy officer Alex Wong.
The company, which acquired the shipyard in 2024 for $100 million, is planning a $5 billion expansion and actively recruiting experts with Virginia-class submarine experience.
While currently building frigates for the Navy, Hanwha says it’s prepared to support U.S. nuclear submarine production if the government decides to proceed.
The announcement follows a trade agreement that reduced South Korean auto tariffs in exchange for a $150 billion investment pledge in U.S. shipbuilding.
