Dr. Nabil Seidah won the 2025 Great Arab Minds Award in Medicine for discovering PCSK9, a key cholesterol-regulating enzyme that led to life-saving drugs.
Egyptian-born scientist Dr. Nabil Seidah, director of the Biochemical Neuroendocrinology Research Unit at Montreal's Clinical Research Institute, has won the 2025 Great Arab Minds Award in Medicine for his groundbreaking discovery of the PCSK9 enzyme, which regulates cholesterol levels and led to the development of widely used PCSK9 inhibitor drugs that reduce heart attack and stroke risk.
His research has also advanced understanding of fatty liver disease, obesity, cancer, and viral infections.
With over 820 publications and more than 71,000 citations, Seidah’s work has had a major global impact.
The award, launched by Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, recognizes exceptional Arab talent in science and aims to inspire future generations of innovators.
