Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger joined GIABA as non-ECOWAS members despite leaving ECOWAS in Jan. 2025.
On December 14, 2025, ECOWAS approved Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger as non-member states of the West African anti-money laundering body GIABA, despite their January 2025 withdrawal from ECOWAS to form the Alliance of Sahel States.
The decision, made at the 68th ECOWAS Authority session in Abuja, requires the three nations to demonstrate strong commitment to AML/CFT/CPF standards and comply with GIABA’s rules.
The move follows a July 2025 recommendation by GIABA’s ministerial committee and aligns with the agency’s statute allowing non-ECOWAS states to join if eligible.
With this approval, GIABA now includes five non-ECOWAS members.
Burkina Faso, Mali y Níger se unieron a GIABA como miembros no pertenecientes a la CEDEAO a pesar de abandonar la CEDEAO en enero de 2025.
