Afghan ex-police commander Ikramuddin Saree was assassinated in Tehran on Dec. 24, likely by the Taliban, in the second such killing this year.
Former Afghan police commander Ikramuddin Saree, who served under the pre-Taliban government in Takhar and Baghlan provinces, was killed in an armed attack outside his Tehran office on December 24.
Iranian authorities confirmed the assassination, with sources close to the anti-Taliban National Resistance Front identifying Saree and a companion as victims, and a third person injured.
The Taliban has not claimed responsibility, but opposition groups accused them of orchestrating the killing, citing a pattern of targeting exiled Afghan officials.
This marks the second high-profile assassination of an anti-Taliban figure in Iran this year, following the September killing of Maruf Gholami.
Thousands of former Afghan security personnel have fled to Iran since 2021, fearing Taliban retaliation despite amnesty promises.
Iran has not formally recognized the Taliban government but maintains diplomatic and security ties with it, and has not commented on Saree’s killing.
