Venezuela passes law punishing support for maritime blockades with up to 20 years in prison, following U.S. tanker seizures.
Venezuela’s National Assembly approved a law imposing up to 20 years in prison and heavy fines for supporting acts deemed piracy or blockades against its maritime trade, following U.S. seizures of two Venezuelan-linked oil tankers.
Passed in an emergency session, the law targets what Caracas calls U.S.-led economic sabotage after Washington seized the tankers Centuries and Skipper over alleged sanctions violations.
The bill awaits President Nicolás Maduro’s signature and includes measures to protect affected businesses.
The opposition backed the U.S. actions, and the full text of the law has not been released.
