UK expands 4G to rural areas via 100+ upgraded masts, boosting coverage from 66% to 81%.
The UK government has upgraded over 100 rural mobile masts ahead of Christmas, expanding 4G coverage to previously underserved areas in Wales, Scotland, and England.
Part of the £1.3bn Shared Rural Network programme, the initiative involves major operators EE, Vodafone, Three, and Virgin Media O2, along with public funding, to improve connectivity for over 9,500 premises, 1,400km of roads, and 400 businesses.
The upgrades support 4G access across 4,019km², including 10 national parks, and have raised national 4G availability from 66% to over 81%.
The project aims to boost communication, economic growth, and tourism in rural regions.
