A study found that a simple leaflet helped older adults understand they don’t need antibiotics for asymptomatic UTI, reducing unnecessary use.
A December 2025 study in Open Forum Infectious Diseases found that a patient-centered educational leaflet helped reduce older adults’ desire for antibiotics for asymptomatic bacteriuria (ASB), a condition with no symptoms.
Among 504 adults aged 65 and older, those who received the leaflet were more comfortable avoiding antibiotics, better understood ASB, and less likely to mistake it for a urinary tract infection.
However, when surgeons recommended antibiotics, patients were more likely to agree, showing clinical advice significantly influences patient decisions.
The results suggest targeted education can help align patient choices with medical guidelines and reduce unnecessary antibiotic use.
