Retired Urumqi editor Duan Zhiyuan spent years honoring Chinese composer Xian Xinghai, who was stranded in Almaty, Kazakhstan, during WWII and supported by the Baikadamov family.
Despite health and financial challenges, Duan traveled to Almaty, met Xian’s daughter, and helped preserve the story.
In recognition, Almaty renamed a street Xian Xinghai Avenue and erected a monument parallel to Baikadamov Avenue, symbolizing their wartime bond.
The cities of Urumqi and Almaty are now officially sister cities, marking a lasting cultural and historical connection rooted in mutual support during China’s War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression.
