RCMP deny racism and excessive force in arrest of Elias Schiller, who suffered frostbite in -30°C weather.
The Northwest Territories RCMP have denied allegations of excessive force and racism following the Dec. 14 arrest of 25-year-old Elias Schiller near Behchokǫ̀, where he suffered frostbite after refusing to exit his vehicle despite -30°C temperatures.
Police say Schiller, wanted on outstanding warrants, provided a false name and resisted arrest, prompting the use of a conducted energy weapon and pepper spray.
Officers state they followed protocol and ensured medical care, while Dene National Chief George Mackenzie condemned the handling of the arrest as racially biased.
The RCMP cited body-worn camera footage and other evidence, invited Mackenzie to review materials, and confirmed an internal review is underway.
No charges have been filed against officers.
