Nigeria will merge NIN with TIN and CAC numbers in 2026 to boost tax compliance and reduce evasion.
Starting in January 2026, Nigeria will use the National Identification Number (NIN) as the official Tax Identification Number (TIN) for individuals and the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC) registration number for businesses, under the Nigeria Tax Administration Act.
This reform, building on the 2019 Finance Act, unifies previous TINs, eliminates duplication, and strengthens tax compliance without requiring physical ID cards.
The change aims to reduce evasion, improve transparency, and ensure fair contributions from taxable individuals and entities, while protecting low-income earners.
The FIRS confirmed the system is not new but being strengthened, and urged the public to disregard misinformation.
