Maine’s drought has left over 540 wells dry, sparking conflict over water access as Poland Spring’s withdrawals rose despite claims of reduction.
Maine is facing a severe drought, with over 540 residential wells dry since August 2024, including in Fryeburg where families used bottled water.
Despite Poland Spring’s claim of reducing withdrawals, data show water withdrawals from its Fryeburg and Denmark sources surged in 2025—reaching 89.6 million gallons by September, up from 68.6 million in 2024.
The company says it withdrew about 410,000 gallons daily, within permit limits, and no violations were found.
However, local officials and residents are frustrated, as the private Fryeburg Water Co. controls water access and has not communicated with the public water district, which seeks to take over the utility amid growing concerns over water security.
La sequía de Maine ha dejado más de 540 pozos secos, provocando conflictos sobre el acceso al agua a medida que las retiradas de Poland Spring aumentaron a pesar de los reclamos de reducción.
