The Jefferson County Humane Society, which took over the Hancock County Animal Shelter in November, has reported progress in its first seven weeks, including staff training, facility cleanups, and a successful West Virginia Pharmacy Board inspection.
A full-time veterinarian, Dr. Lydia Friend, now provides on-site care, and the shelter is open daily from noon to 4 p.m., with plans to expand hours.
As of mid-December, 58 animals were at the shelter, including 17 in foster care.
Since December 1, the shelter has facilitated 34 adoptions and six reclaims—double the previous two months—through events at Pet Supplies Plus and online listings.
Future goals include expanding volunteer programs, rebuilding business partnerships, upgrading medical facilities, and hosting an open house.
