Irish local authorities collected less than 10% of €8.6 million in levies imposed on 778 derelict properties in 2024, leaving €26.3 million in unpaid fines. A total of 1,916 sites were registered as derelict, with the highest numbers in Limerick, Mayo, and Cork City. Dublin City Council had the largest outstanding debt at €7.9 million, followed by Cork City with €5.9 million. Notices were issued for 2,869 properties, with Cork City Council leading in enforcement. Nearly €2.2 million was collected, 566 cases were resolved without action, and 135 sites were acquired—5 by agreement and 126 compulsorily. Nine councils, including Leitrim, Kerry, and Monaghan, imposed no levies. The Derelict Sites Act 1990 allows up to 7% levies with 1.25% monthly interest on unpaid amounts.
