Iran cut gas exports to Iraq, causing major power shortages.
Iran has abruptly halted all natural gas exports to Iraq, causing a loss of 4,000 to 4,500 megawatts of electricity generation capacity, according to Iraq’s Electricity Ministry.
The cutoff, attributed to "unforeseen circumstances" in Iran, has forced some power plants to shut down or reduce output, worsening existing energy shortages.
Iraq, which relies on Iranian gas for about a third of its electricity, is now switching some plants to domestic fuels in coordination with the Oil Ministry to maintain grid stability.
The U.S. revoked a waiver in March 2025 allowing Iraq to import electricity from Iran, limiting alternative options.
No timeline for the resumption of supplies has been provided.
