Iowa State defensive coordinator Jon Heacock, 65, has retired after a 43-year college football coaching career, announcing the decision on December 23, 2025.
He spent 10 seasons at Iowa State under Matt Campbell, helping transform the defense into a top Big 12 unit and earning Broyles Award nominations from 2022 to 2025.
Prior to Iowa State, he led Youngstown State from 2001 to 2009, reaching the FCS semifinals in 2006 and winning two conference titles.
He began coaching in 1983 at Toledo and also served on Campbell’s staff at Toledo.
Heacock expressed gratitude for his time in Ames and encouraged those he worked with to stay grounded in faith and family.
