India expands AI wildlife detection on railways to 1,122 km to prevent animal train collisions.
Indian Railways has expanded its AI-powered wildlife detection system, using Distributed Acoustic System (DAS) technology, to 1,122 route kilometers to prevent train collisions with elephants, lions, and tigers.
The system alerts operators in real time when animals are detected within 500 meters, helping avoid accidents.
Initially launched on 141 km of the Northeast Frontier Railway, it has saved over 160 elephants since 2024.
Despite a recent fatal collision in Assam that killed seven elephants, the system continues to expand, though full implementation of mitigation measures like underpasses remains delayed due to funding and administrative hurdles.
