Egypt has begun a four-year public reassembly of King Khufu’s 4,500-year-old solar boat at the newly opened Grand Egyptian Museum in Cairo, with visitors able to watch the restoration process in real time.
The 42-meter-long vessel, made of 1,650 cedarwood fragments, was discovered in 1954 near the Great Pyramid and is believed to have served a ceremonial role in the pharaoh’s afterlife journey.
The project, part of Egypt’s efforts to boost tourism and preserve ancient heritage, involves collaboration between Egyptian and Japanese experts using advanced conservation techniques.
The museum, which opened in November 2025, houses nearly 50,000 artifacts, including treasures from King Tutankhamun’s tomb.
