China deploys AI, drones, and satellites in new system to monitor and protect biodiversity nationwide.
China has launched an advanced, integrated monitoring network to protect biodiversity, using satellites, drones, ground sensors, and AI-powered tools to replace manual surveys. The system, known as the "Five Platforms System," enables real-time tracking of species, ecosystems, and environmental changes across vast regions. In Inner Mongolia, researchers are building a grassland biodiversity database with over 80% accuracy in plant identification using AI and portable equipment. Unmanned aerial vehicle airports are planned to expand drone operations, while mobile patrols and robotic "dogs" with 360-degree cameras improve wildlife and vegetation monitoring in remote areas. These innovations, led by the Ministry of Ecology and Environment’s Satellite Application Center for Ecology and Environment, support conservation efforts, combat desertification and invasive species, and enhance ecosystem management nationwide.
