Author Puja Changoiwala accuses the Oscar-shortlisted film *Homebound* of plagiarizing her 2021 novel, claiming key elements were copied despite the filmmakers citing a news article.
Author Puja Changoiwala has filed a legal complaint in India’s Bombay High Court, alleging that the 2024 Hindi film *Homebound*, shortlisted for an Oscar, plagiarized her 2021 novel of the same name.
She claims the film copied key elements including plot, dialogue, narrative structure, and scenes centered on the 2020 COVID-19 migrant exodus, despite the filmmakers citing a New York Times article as inspiration.
Changoiwala says her legal team sent a notice in October 2024, which she alleges was ignored.
The film, starring Ishaan Khatter and Janhvi Kapoor and produced by Dharma Productions, remains India’s official submission for the 98th Academy Awards.
Dharma Productions has not issued a public statement beyond confirming legal responses.
