Afghan man charged in D.C. shooting that killed one National Guardsman and injured another.
Rahmanullah Lakanwal, a 29-year-old Afghan national, has been charged in federal court with the November 26, 2025, shooting in Washington, D.C., that killed 20-year-old National Guardsman Sarah Beckstrom and critically injured Staff Sgt.
Andrew Wolfe, both from the West Virginia National Guard.
Lakanwal, who lived in Bellingham, Washington, faces five federal felony charges, including first-degree murder and using a firearm during a crime, after allegedly transporting a stolen .357 revolver from Washington state to D.C. and conducting targeted online searches for the White House and Washington, D.C., before the attack.
Surveillance footage shows him near the Farragut West Metro Station when he opened fire on the two uniformed guardsmen, who were on duty as Special Deputy U.S.
Marshals.
Beckstrom died the following day, Thanksgiving; Wolfe survived but remains in recovery.
The case, transferred to federal court, allows for the potential death penalty.
