Tonga’s Crown Prince resumes top government roles in new cabinet under Prime Minister Fakafanua.
Tonga’s Crown Prince Tupouto’a Ulukalala is set to resume his role as Minister of Foreign Affairs and Defence in the new government under Prime Minister Lord Fakafanua, who won a parliamentary vote 16 to 10.
The appointment, confirmed by Fakafanua, marks the first cabinet decision and follows a constitutional provision allowing up to four non-elected ministers.
The Prince, heir to the throne and married to Fakafanua’s sister, previously held the roles under former Prime Minister Dr ‘Aisake Eke.
Appointed ministers have full powers but cannot vote in a vote of no confidence.
The full cabinet must still be approved by King Tupou VI.
