Texas State canceled a Black history exhibit, sparking backlash over free speech and equity.
Texas State University canceled plans to host the Black History 101 Mobile Museum, a traveling exhibit of over 1,500 artifacts celebrating overlooked Black history, during February’s Black History Month.
Initially attributed to Texas’ Senate Bill 17, which restricts DEI initiatives at public universities, the university later clarified that a staff member misstated the reason.
The exhibit, created by educator Khalid el-Hakim, has been shown at hundreds of institutions nationwide.
Civil rights groups including the ACLU of Texas and NAACP Legal Defense Fund urged the university to reverse the decision, citing First Amendment concerns.
Texas State said it is reconsidering the exhibit for future programming, while el-Hakim called the cancellation censorship and reaffirmed his commitment to sharing Black history.
