South Korea created special courts in Seoul to speed up trials for rebellion, treason, and foreign subversion, starting Dec. 23, 2025.
South Korea’s National Assembly passed a bill on December 23, 2025, creating specialized judicial panels in Seoul’s district and high courts to handle cases involving rebellion, treason, and foreign subversion.
The legislation, approved 175–2 with two abstentions, aims to ensure faster, more consistent rulings in high-profile political cases, particularly following criticism over delays in former President Yoon Suk-yeol’s rebellion trial.
The panels, selected by judges’ councils, will not apply to Yoon’s current case, which remains under the existing system.
The bill, expected to be signed by President Lee Jae Myung, faces opposition from conservatives who argue it undermines judicial independence.
The law takes effect immediately, with future appeals potentially handled by the new panels.
