Masdar launched Southeast Asia’s largest floating solar project in Malaysia, powering 100,000 homes.
Masdar, Abu Dhabi’s renewable energy firm, has launched a 200-megawatt floating solar project at Malaysia’s Chereh Dam, the largest of its kind in Southeast Asia and its first in the country.
The project, part of a 10-gigawatt renewable roadmap with Malaysia, will power over 100,000 homes and is valued at RM850 million.
Developed by a consortium including Malaysian firms and backed by a power purchase agreement with Tenaga Nasional Berhad, it secured the lowest tariff in Malaysia’s floating solar tender.
Using advanced floating technology, it aims to boost efficiency and reduce water evaporation.
Financing is secured through international non-recourse loans, signaling strong confidence.
The initiative supports Malaysia’s 2030 renewable target of 35% and aligns with national energy transition goals.
Masdar is also studying a similar project at Murum reservoir in Sarawak.
