A man sentenced for harassing a social worker received one day in jail, probation, and a lifetime weapons ban.
Avery Toulouse, a 27-year-old man from Sagamok First Nation, was sentenced in Sudbury court for criminal harassment, assault with a weapon, and breaching probation and release orders after repeatedly following and threatening a social worker who had previously helped him.
The incidents occurred from July to September 2024, including showing up at her home, following her to work, and confronting her on a city bus.
Despite a joint recommendation for a 15-month jail term, the judge imposed a one-day sentence—time already served—along with one year of probation, a lifetime weapons ban, mandatory domestic violence treatment, a DNA order, and a requirement to show good conduct.
The judge emphasized the social worker was not a savior but a professional and warned that future violence against women would result in longer prison time.
