A homeless man with 97 prior convictions was jailed for six months for defecating in a cathedral and urinating in a police cell.
Richard McDermott, a 42-year-old homeless man with a history of 97 prior convictions, was sentenced to six months in prison for defecating on the floor of St Peter and Paul Cathedral in Ennis and urinating in a police cell on November 12, 2024.
Judge Alec Gabbett imposed three months for cathedral damage, one month for the cell incident, and two months for public order offenses.
Garda Thomas Murray testified McDermott was intoxicated, verbally abusive, and resisted arrest, while solicitor Tara Godfrey cited his alcohol dependency, irritable bowel syndrome, intellectual disability, and lack of shelter as contributing factors.
The judge expressed sorrow over McDermott’s circumstances and emphasized the need for treatment, with police warning release on bail could lead to further harm.
