Delta Electricity, operator of the Vales Point power station in New South Wales, has been found guilty of causing a 2022 fish kill in Lake Macquarie due to a faulty chlorine dosing system that released concentrated sodium hypochlorite into the water, killing an estimated 15,000 marine animals. The Land and Environment Court ruled the company failed to maintain the system properly, leading to oxygen depletion. The NSW EPA prosecuted the case, marking the first such action against an NSW coal-fired power station in over ten years. A sentencing hearing is set for February 6, 2025, with a maximum fine of $1 million.
