Zambian student Michael Njovu studies in China to help modernize the Tanzania-Zambia Railway, a key African infrastructure project.
A 26-year-old Zambian student, Michael Njovu, is studying transportation engineering at Central South University in China, aiming to help modernize the Tanzania-Zambia Railway (TAZARA) after graduating in 2026.
The historic rail line, built in the 1970s with Chinese support, is being upgraded to increase freight capacity to 2.4 million tonnes annually and reduce delivery times by nearly two-thirds.
The university, which trained professionals for the original project, now educates students from over 20 developing countries, with 90% of African graduates returning home to support infrastructure development.
Njovu’s work reflects ongoing international cooperation and efforts to strengthen regional connectivity in Africa.
