A 21-year-old Australian farmer, who euthanized a cow at 12 during a drought, will advocate for rural youth mental health through ABC’s 2026 Heywire program.
Erin Walker, now 21, recalls being 12 when she euthanized a cow on her family’s drought-stricken New England, Australia farm after her parents and siblings left for work.
Forced to manage the farm alone with her sister, she faced emotional strain from losing livestock and watching the land deteriorate.
Though she hid her pain, a visit from the Drought Angels helped her recognize the mental health toll.
Now one of 35 youth selected for ABC’s 2026 Heywire program, she aims to advocate for better mental health support for rural youth facing similar hardships, while still holding onto her dream of returning to farming.
