The UNDP has launched an open innovation challenge on Freelancer to create low-cost tools—under $5,000—for detecting underwater explosives up to 30 meters deep and 5 meters away, enabling non-specialists to mark sites via GPS or mobile devices.
Winning solutions will receive $20,000.
Millions of tonnes of unexploded ordnance remain in global waters, threatening fishing, infrastructure, and public health, while current detection methods often require expensive military-grade equipment.
The initiative, supported by SeaFreight Labs, taps Freelancer’s 85 million global experts to develop accessible, scalable solutions.
Submissions close March 9, 2026.
