Stephen Byrnes sentenced to five years for stabbing man during cocaine-fueled fight.
Stephen Byrnes, 33, was sentenced to five years in prison with the final year suspended for stabbing Damien Fitzpatrick twice during a cocaine-fueled argument at his Limerick home in November 2023.
The attack occurred after the two men returned from a trip to Kerry, where more cocaine was obtained.
A female witness identified Byrnes as the attacker, and police found drugs, paraphernalia, and blood at the scene.
He claimed self-defense, but a jury rejected that.
Prosecutors noted he did not intend serious harm, but highlighted prior convictions for assault and weapons possession.
Judge Colin Daly considered Byrnes’ troubled upbringing and history of drug addiction when sentencing, and imposed a concurrent three-year sentence for knife production.
He must also complete a 12-month probation program and refrain from violence for a year.
