A Somali man was sentenced to five years in prison for using diplomatic passports to smuggle women into Ireland.
A 40-year-old Somali man, Abdallatif Mohamed, was sentenced to five years in prison for using genuine Somali diplomatic passports to help multiple women enter Ireland unlawfully between September and November 2024.
He admitted to four counts of aiding unlawful entry, including a November 26 flight from Abu Dhabi with two women claiming to be his family, whose passports did not match their appearances.
Gardaí found the passports, $13,910 in cash, and phones on him.
The women said they paid $14,000 to $15,000 to be brought to Ireland to seek protection.
Mohamed claimed he was only visiting briefly with a return ticket, but the women intended to stay.
Two prior incidents were confirmed by CCTV.
The court stressed diplomatic passports are for official use only, and Judge Dara Hayes called the offense serious, imposing a five-year sentence with six months suspended, backdated to his arrest.
