Rare winter migratory birds have arrived in southern India, with thousands spotted in Thoothukudi and Chilika Lake.
Rare migratory birds including Oriental Darters, Little Cormorants, Spoonbills, Medium Egrets, and Rosy Starlings have arrived in Thoothukudi, Tamil Nadu, as part of their annual winter migration from Northwest Asia and Eastern Europe.
The birds, drawn by favorable weather and food sources, typically arrive between September and October and stay until March or April.
Similar large numbers have been recorded at Chilika Lake in Odisha, where over 87 species were observed—exceeding last year’s count—with more than 200,000 birds arriving.
Conservation efforts include public awareness campaigns and restricted access to sensitive areas like the Nalabana Bird Sanctuary.
