New Zealand warns Aucklanders of yellow-legged hornets, with 38 queens found and tech trials planned.
Biosecurity New Zealand is urging Auckland residents to stay alert for yellow-legged hornets during the summer holidays, following over 6,870 public reports and the discovery of 38 queen hornets, including 25 with nests, primarily on the North Shore.
More than 6,540 ground surveys and 780 traps have been deployed up to 11km from initial sightings.
Next month, New Zealand will trial advanced tracking technology from the Netherlands, supported by UK experts, to locate nests as warmer weather may encourage larger tree nests.
The public is asked to report sightings with photos and locations via the exotic pest hotline at 0800 809 966, selecting 'plants, spiders or insects'.
