A man stole a deputy’s car during a mental health incident, sparking a multi-county chase that injured two officers.

A 34-year-old man, William Waters, was arrested after stealing a Spartanburg County deputy’s patrol car during a mental health-related incident at a QuikTrip on Saturday night. The pursuit, which began around 9:45 p.m. and spanned three counties, ended near mile marker 60 on I-26 when Waters surrendered. One deputy was struck by the open driver’s door and briefly dragged but was not seriously injured. A second deputy was airlifted to the hospital after a crash near mile marker 53 but is expected to recover. Waters, who has a prior DUI conviction, faces charges including grand larceny over $10,000, failing to stop for officers, and refusing a sobriety test. The South Carolina Highway Patrol is investigating the crash, and the incident remains under review.
