Liberia’s Senate approved a mining deal without key safeguards, raising concerns over infrastructure, control, and transparency.
The Liberian Senate ratified the Ivanhoe/HPX mining access agreement despite warnings from its Joint Committee, which recommended key safeguards including a fully paved road, a rail line, and a five-year clause for Guinea’s transshipment approval.
The Senate proceeded without adopting these measures, leaving Liberia vulnerable to infrastructure delays, loss of asset control, and uncertain financial terms.
Critics, including Senator Saah Joseph, condemned the move as harmful to national interests and a failure to ensure transparency, accountability, and long-term benefits.
The agreement passed 20-1-4, with the Senate now notifying the President.
