Irish pharmacist suspended two months for letting student dispense meds unsupervised.
A Longford pharmacist, Gareth Johnston, was suspended for two months after the Pharmaceutical Society of Ireland found him guilty of professional misconduct for allowing an unsupervised pharmacy student to dispense prescription and pharmacy-only medications at three of his outlets in 2021.
The investigation, prompted by an anonymous complaint, revealed the student had worked alone for hours at the Lanesboro pharmacy, dispensing 21 medications, including Motilium, with no registered pharmacist present.
Inaccurate and incomplete duty records across all locations showed multiple days without documented pharmacist coverage.
A related criminal case led to seven convictions and fines totaling €3,500, plus €4,920 in costs.
Johnston admitted to the breaches of the Code of Conduct and Pharmacy Act 2007, and while corrective measures were later implemented, the PSI deemed the suspension necessary to protect patient safety and uphold regulatory standards.
