India launches nationwide survey on early-grade teaching in 1,050 schools to boost foundational learning.
India is launching the National Teaching Learning Practices Survey (TLPS) 2025 on December 22, 2025, the country’s first nationwide study on early-grade classroom teaching in Grades 1 and 2.
Conducted across 1,050 government schools in nine states, the survey evaluates teacher-student interactions, use of learning materials, and student engagement, with a focus on diverse linguistic and socio-economic contexts.
Supported by the Language and Learning Foundation and Tata Trusts, and implemented with education partners, the study aims to inform teacher training, pedagogy, and policy under the National Education Policy 2020 and NIPUN Bharat Mission.
Findings will support improvements in foundational literacy and numeracy, emphasizing instruction in children’s native languages.
